Protective Outdoor Clothes for the Coldest Weather

Do You Dress Up Properly?

If you dislike winter, you just don’t dress up warm enough. This piece of cozy advice will help hikers and alpinists, as well as citizens who are roaming cold urban streets.

Outdoor Nature and Beautiful Landscape

Three Layers System

So, to feel better in the cold weather, you need three layers of clothes:

  • Base layer
  • Mid layer
  • Outer layer

They have individual qualities we’ll review later in the article. Right, you will resemble a penguin, but these birds don’t freeze! In addition, contemporary fashion offers us choices on any taste and price. Spend a little more time picking, and you’ll look awesome even on an arctic expedition.

Base Layer

Being poured with water is not the fanciest of feelings, especially under dozens of layers you can’t take off. Underwear must keep your skin pleasantly dry whether you’re running to university or riding a bicycle.

A good base coat has two main options:

  • Synthetic or wool fiber

Put away your cotton preferences till the next summer. This fiber won’t do in cold weather because it soaks moisture fast and gives it up reluctantly. As a result, you’re wet, chilled, and irritated.

So, choose something synthetic or woolen. The first type of clothes are available everywhere and stretch easily. Synthetic fabric will snag your body tightly, as it must be. On the contrary, the woolen fabric is natural, and you will avoid white stains and smell, which is the problem of most synthetic alternatives.

  • Thickness

If you’re a citizen, and your winters are rather cold than freezing, choose lightweight underwear. If you spend a long time walking streets and exposing yourself to harsh weather, you may prefer a mid-weighted sweater. Finally, if you live under the polar night sky or are in love with active skiing, consider heavyweight fibers.

Mid Layer

A mid-coat is what stops chilly air from crawling under your skin. Depending on the region, some are used to short and light jackets, and others choose long overcoats. Most mid-coats will save you from rare drops of rain but are helpless against showers and wind storms.

Always note the material your jacket is made from:

  • A synthetic filling is what almost won’t burden your shoulders. Even when it’s wet to the base, your body won’t lose the heat. But synthetic materials are impenetrable for air, so wear something else when doing sport if you don’t want to melt.
  • A down feather filling is invisible, breathable, and can be packed in a three times smaller bag. These jackets have a good waterproof coating because the soaked feather loses all its perfect warming qualities. The down feather fits for almost all kinds of activities and weathers, excluding humid lands.
  • A fleece coat will ventilate your body, keep you warm inside, and protect you from the drizzle. If you don’t like messing with pills, consider a hardshell fleece with a smooth shiny surface. It’s an effective and stylish alternative to puffy jackets, especially for active people.

If we’re talking about pants, they use the same or nearly the same fabrics. Besides, there is a softshell with high flexibility and cotton textile. As legs don’t sweat, you can consider fiber-lined cotton pants, dense moleskin, and woolen corduroy. Whichever denims you choose, they must not be too tight to allow free blood circulation.

Winter accessories must be chosen carefully, too. Gloves won’t protect you simply because they’re gloves. Consider fleece, multiple covering layers, or skin—anything without breaches. Woven hats and scarfs will protect you only if the temperature stays close to or above zero.

Outer Layer

The purpose of an outer layer is to protect you from snow, rain, and wind storms. In soft regions, it may be optional, while in countries with tropical rains, dust storms, or blizzards the third shell is a must-have.

So, choose the outer layer depending on your town’s common forecast. In the humid climate, you’ll need a 100% waterproof coat. Thick fiber will defend you against severe winds. Against rare water drops, you can wear a less expensive plastic raincoat, but frequent rains require an improved breathable shell.

Every person is immune to cold in their way. Follow your perception when choosing winter clothes. Learn more about the fabric that interests you and apply its properties to the weather outside.
